I’ve come to love more and more the beauty of extremely well-crafted utilitarian pieces. Something about carrying one rugged piece with me through years of life adventures appeals to me very much. A beautiful example of such work is Vael’s line of bags. Their products are made with premium materials and are meant “for the wandering global creative class.”

I’m seriously considering getting the tote, which is carried like a backpack. It’s just gorgeous.

I’ve just discovered the work of National Television and, lemme tellya, my knees are a-wobblin’. It looks like they focus on animation/motion work, and they kick ass at it. I love the Drive Every Drop commercial for Honda (screenshots above), and the Play Doh commercial for American Express.

Of all the iPod speakers I’ve come across, this is by far the classiest. DWR is selling this iVictrola by designer Matt Richmond. The amplification of sound is entirely acoustic, needing no batteries or electricity. I love the look of an antique gramophone, with its sweeping lines and top-heaviness. It isn’t likely I’ll ever have the money to buy a real gramophone - who plays RECORDS nowadays? - but this little beauty would do quite nicely.

I’m curious about the sound; anybody ever seen one at work?

How great are these ties made from 50% recorded audio cassette tape and 50% colored thread? They’re by improbable objects and the fabric is actually audible if you run a tape head over it (think it’s a lie? Check out the demo).

I love using needle and thread with unconventional materials (as evidenced by my present to the boy last year). This stitched moleskine makes my heart all a-flutter. BYOOT. Katie of What Katie Does decided to use thread instead of ink in her section of a travelling moleskine. I think the results are lovely, and have just come up with new ideas for christmas-present-wrapping + stitching.

I’ve just discovered Laura Lombardi’s jewelry, and man, is it gorgeous. Her etsy store is full of fantastic shapes, both geometric and organic. I’m loving the symmetry of some of her pieces, and the reptition of forms. If you’re looking for gift ideas, her store is worth a visit!
